Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. It delivers targeted pulses to affected areas, promoting tissue regeneration, reducing inflammation, and providing effective pain relief. Radial shockwave therapy, the type we use, generates ballistic pressure waves through a compressed air system, making it ideal for treating superficial musculoskeletal problems.
Unlike focused shockwave therapy, which penetrates deeper for conditions like kidney stones, radial shockwave is gentler and spreads energy over a broader area, perfect for tendons, muscles, and ligaments. This therapy has been widely studied and is FDA-cleared for various applications, offering a safe alternative to medications or invasive procedures.
We integrate shockwave therapy into our comprehensive chiropractic care plans to address the root causes of pain and dysfunction. During a session, our experienced team applies the Storz Ultra D-Actor 200 handpiece to the targeted area, delivering acoustic waves that penetrate the tissue. This stimulates blood flow, breaks down scar tissue, and accelerates healing.
Shockwave therapy complements other treatments like adjustments, massage, and rehabilitation exercises. It's quick—sessions last about 10-15 minutes—and requires no recovery time, so you can resume daily activities immediately.
Shockwave therapy offers numerous advantages for pain relief and recovery:
Pain Reduction: Directly stimulates nerves to block pain signals and reduce inflammation.
Improved Healing: Enhances blood flow, promotes new tissue growth, and breaks down calcifications.
Non-Invasive: No surgery, injections, or medications needed.
Quick and Convenient: Short sessions with immediate return to activities.
Long-Lasting Results: Many patients experience sustained relief from chronic conditions.
Plantar Fasciitis: Relieves heel pain by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair.
Achilles Tendinitis: Eases tendon pain and improves mobility for athletes and active individuals.
Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Targets elbow pain from overuse, helping reduce discomfort and restore function.
Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Addresses inner elbow pain similar to tennis elbow, aiding in recovery from repetitive strain.
Shin Splints: Alleviates lower leg pain common in runners and sports enthusiasts.
Tendinopathies and Fasciopathies: Including rotator cuff issues, patellar tendinitis, and more.
Jumper's Knee (Patellar Tendinopathy): Reduces knee pain from jumping activities by stimulating tendon healing.
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome: Eases hip pain by targeting inflammation in the outer thigh area.
Chronic Low Back Pain: Manages persistent lumbar spine pain by promoting tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation.
Neck Pain (Cervicalgia): Relieves cervical spine discomfort, improves mobility, and addresses muscle tension.
Myofascial Pain Syndrome: Targets trigger points in spinal muscles to alleviate chronic pain and stiffness.
Our protocols are based on evidence-based guidelines to ensure optimal results. A standard course of radial shockwave therapy at Midwest Muscle & Joint Clinic includes:
Number of Sessions: 3-5 treatments, spaced 1 week apart to allow for healing.
Pulses per Session: 2,000-3,000 pulses, depending on the condition and area treated.
Frequency and Intensity: Pulses delivered at 4-20 Hz, with energy levels adjusted for comfort and effectiveness (higher frequencies often feel more tolerable).
Duration: Each session takes 10-15 minutes
We customize the protocol based on your diagnosis, pain level, and response to treatment. Many patients notice improvement after the first session, with full benefits emerging over 4-12 weeks as the body heals.
